Here are some of my guidelines about my hobby. They make sure - that it remains a hobby.
I do not hunt for machines. There is no special machine on the market - which I must have. I decide by possibility and if I like it. Now, after 33 machines - I mostly decide for the reason of space and electric installation ;-)
I love to read at eBay: RARE! But I would never buy it. #1 mostly it's not true and even if #2 maybe someone else need it more ;-) and he is okay with some overpriced product where he may have to spend same amount for repair.
I started in 2003 with my first 2 machines. Some guy from a move theatre called me and ask if I'm interested in an Addams Family and Terminator 2 pinball - each 800 €. He was to lazy to remove the machines from there.
No, I play just for fun. I do not do any competitions or turnaments - not even when friends are here. I do not practice special tricks. Yes, of course - my name is on top of any high score at my machines ... far away from my friends ;-)
I have only 2 new machines (2019 & 2020). The games are great - the machines are disappointing. Mostly the new GNR (LE) from JJP is a bag of problems, malfunctions and damaged parts. Of course: It looks great!
My old machines are serviced by myself. Fortunately - there is not much repair needed. Capacitors blowing away - I exchange them and the machine will work. All machines got an additional fan. I remove any dust by dry Nitrogen gas.
I do not often take part of discussions on websites or forums. There are many reasons why - mostly - I like to decide for my own. I also think, with 32 machines I know a thing or two - and I do not like to get into some discussion between a newbie and a self-proclaimed professional.
I do not collect. I have my machines for using it, playing and having fun. They must be interesting to me, must have something special and must work! If it is a gift - okay, I will make some space and take it - even when I already have on of it!
Yes and No. I do not change my old machines to LED. Every machine got self designed and printed inner art blades. I add sometimes parts - made by my 3D printers. Three machines got a Raspberries PI with more functions (light & sensors).
I can't read about sound tuning! People discussing about sound mods - talking about parts more worth than the whole machine. My space is to large on size to participate by a BOSE® or Teufel® sound system and using headphones is just crazy!.
I destroyed some displays over the years - capacitors exploded directly on the board. So, I got some Pin2DMD displays. I enjoyed the color when I turned on the machine. I enjoyed my machine much more 2 weeks later, when I got my original display repaired!
I dont know - my old machines dont have it - and they look nice and it seems they did not need it. New machines with nice artwork - like the Munsters - seem to be made for it. After 2 weeks my playfield looks like the moon - without the protector. To late.
I love inner art blades. I extended the playfield of all my machines with slef designed blades. I use graphics wich are belonging to the theme - design the stripes and print them with my panorama photo printer - each in one piece. The thermo print is good for 100 years.
Honestly, I board only 3 machines by myself. The Addams Family, Terminator 2 and The Munsters Pro. All other machines where gifts or presents. Most of my 'old' machines I got from friends - working in club business or directly with these machines. The GNR was bought at Pinball-Universe (DE) - but still from a friend as a present. And I found out - unboxing a new machine - is something realy cool!
...for new stuff: I got 'The Munsters PRO' and 'GNR LE' from Pinball Universe (DE). I also got some Modds from them. All together - very friendly, very competent and just a good contact - I will also use in future. Prices are good too. I also know Pauls50s - very friendly and competent too. Freddys Pinball could not help me with any of my requests. For parts and repair - read the next column! "
Even when Harald is a bit 'special' - a good place to buy parts and get some service notes - is Harald Litfin from flipperteile.com. I think - I got most of my things for exchange or repair there. If it is not on stock - he can get it or you dont need it. When you call, you can get support or solutions for many questions - because he know a thing or two... But - what ever you do - do not talk about LED lights! ;-)
This is a record from now - what I play now - the values coming from a meter in each power line - they record the 'on' hours of each machine.
I reset the counter from time to time.
(Luckily - I meassure the 'on' time and not the power consumption.)
Here are some things I do for my machines. Not all machines are a classic relict which I like to keep like this, but as I mention more down on this website - I do not to much - just a bit - sometimes I call it optimization. Everybody can do it his own way. Since I have a very low rate of problems - it can't be so wrong what I do ;-)
All the electronic is free from any dust! I use a vacuum cleaner and a pressure bottle of nitrogen gas. The nitrogen is absolutely dry. Since I added a large fan in each back box - I also 'closed' all vent wholes with a filter material. It's the stuff you can get for Kärcher vaccum cleaners. This has a good air flow and it still filters mirco partricles. I checked the temperature and airflow by an infrared camera - and I'm sattisfied how it works. The filters are working too. The fan is at the top and sucks air out. The playfield I clean with some cleaning foam. Next I will try the stuff I got from Pinball Universe. Glass I just clean with a simple alcohol based mixture.
Some machines have such a nice surrounding but something such a illumination. Flintstones is such a pinball. Instead of overloading it now with lights and effects, I just addes some spot lights - printed in the 3D printer - working by a LED. I seldom use white. Because the LED light is a bit different from normal light - sometimes you have to check - if the stuff you illumintate is still looking nice. I often use amber colors. I also use resistors to hold the brightness a bit lower than maximum. Most spots I just add to some existing screws and go with the cable right to the next lamp. SOLID-STATE: I use LED lights which are good for car CAN bus system - there is no ghost flickering.
My "The Munsters" got a RASPERRY PI in the cabin. I had a look to the rail illumination and it was just not satisfying me. Just some light? I added to sensors (IR sensors) to the rail - left and right side. I added 2 flood lights made from 9 LED light each to the rails - direction to th wholes. At the stairs (up) I used amber, at the exit (pipe) I used green. The amber is allways pulsing a little bit by 20 to 35% brightness. The green is normaly off. If a ball comes in, the amber will turn on 100% and fade out. When the ball reaches the second sensor the green will turn on flickering and fade off. All controlles by the PI because of the very different ball speed and light times.
First: Never uses stronger fuses! I fixed some of these problems by loooong investigation work. It was allways the same problem: The sockets for the lights are the simplest of its kind. There is only a thin isolation between one pole and the other. A bit bending and it can be a short circuit. If it not this, watch all the cable. They used staplers to fix the cables to the wood board. Sometimes cables got damaged by that. At my Jurassic Park i had to remove all lights out of the sockets - unpluged the circuits and could find the problem circuit in seconds - and the stapler clip - which was so bad located - over a socket and connected the red with the black wire...
You have a nice little battery box on your main board - for storing settingshigh scores and other values? Remove it from there - or buy high quality batteries. I never had a leaked Duracell battery ... but ... I had three main boards with really bad issues - just because of leaked batteries. The acid from the batteries will destroy everything - believe me! If you do not like to remove the box from the board - just remove the batteries, extend the plus und minus pole from the box on the mainboard with a long wire - and put a second battery box somewhere into the backbox including the batteries. This can save you a lot of stress and money and takes just some minutes time to do it.
In the past most of the electronic damages were coming from capacitors. The damage what they make is not limited to some components arround - it can also damage the board itself. There a two dangerous things - the liquid which leaks from a capacitor is an acid - if you do not remove it very clean it will destroy the board. The other problem is - often they burst open at the bottom and a very hot flame comes out - this will destroy the board to. So, when I change capacitors - I try to use larger ones - if there is enough space. YOu can not change the capacity , but you change use a higher voltage (this will increase the size). I also add a distance plate between capacitor and board.
Here are all of my 33 machines. The pictures are sometimes not showing my personal machine - I just wanted to show the playfield. The order is just like it is - no special reason for #1 and #33. I added the files I collected - mostly from the pinball database - over the years. They helped me to repair and service my machines. Please - do not forget, this is a private website - no commercial offers.

What a light show! It's a real breathtaking machine - in any way (also, when you try to lift it up). After days of playing - new stuff was showing up, new modes, new alternative sound files... Some people said 'overloaded'... Yes, maybe a bit - but this is a real entertaining machine - I do not like to miss any part of it. I never seen people before - next to me - saying WOW - when I'm playing and at GNR a song is starting. Now they say WOW and then there are quiet for a while.... |

I loved already the TV show! I got these machine, because I like my Addams Family. I choose the PRO version, because I did not like the retro design from the Premium version. But mostly I did not like the lower playfield. All videos I have seen - I was seeing I overspeed running little ball - without the physics of the real big ones. So, the LE - which is colored again - was also no choice. I'm happy with my PRO. I love it. I added some mods. Often I go into to the hall at midnight - just to play Midnight Madness. |

Such a nice machine - so close to the movie. There are also enough modes - so playing gets not boring. The 6 multiball is enorm. I'm allways scared, when Frankenstein is throwing the ball - mostly it hits the glass hard... It's on of my most played machines. |

WTH? What can I say, it's the Addams Family. I own now 3 of them -working-, number 4 - I used for parts and tests. I loved the TV show and the movies. I often repeat the black humor of Wednesday (especially from Christina Ricci in the movies). The machine is cool - even, when it's a bit outdated. Of course it belong to a cool movie. The game itself is good, features like the Thing (icecold hand in Germany) are famous - and of course a big magnetic wheel. But - if I compare to other machines or newer...it's only the movie affiliation, which makes it so interesting. I modded one of my machine with a lot of 3D printed parts, the other 2 are original - I added only some graphics (decals). I'm working on a nice topper, to replace the simple plactic house ... |

A machine - I'm proud to have. I love the movie. When I had the chance to get an autograph from Mel Gibson and and James Garner years ago in Los Angeles, both ask me - if I'm a big fan of the movie - and they where suprised, when I told them - the autographs will replace the instruction and pricing cards at 'their' pinball machine. The game is just nice! The steamboat and all stuff on the field. Even the gameplay makes me turning on the machine often. |

A pinball machine can not bring the scarry moments back - which you had - watching the movies at midnight... They tried - but they failed. The machine is easy made and boring after short time of playing. Even Freddy looks terrible - but another way... |

Another machine - based on a TV show. It is made nice and much more complex than others. I like the very low bumpers and the other toys - known from the original series. I do not spend to much time with it, because it does not 'hold' or 'keep' me at the gameplay. |

A very unnecessary. The playfield reminds on othe rmachines of this kind - just a copy from a 'master version' with some little changes. It's boring - nothing realy happens at the playfield. Pure - like the movie. A nice example for: Merchandising can go totally wrong! Last 2 years it was turned on just for service. |

There is a mod video at Youtube - I was first impressed and then I could see - how you can totally destroy a classic machine - with overloading. Instead of using spot light (I often add) - they illuminated thing from the inside - so now - the whole thick stone houses at the right - are glowing ??!! The gameplay is nice. And at 'TNT Amusements' I have seen another LED overloaded version - maybe these guys are just colorblind ... they are able to ruin any machine. Yo-Ho - Yo-Ho... Wow, another copy of a DataEast 'master'. It look they are all prepared already with the same blue color - because here you see exactly the one from StarWars. Sound are also very similar - and gameplay - removed the deathstar - put a skull there. Okay. But it es a nice machine. I love the lighs and how they moving arround. The whole upper part of the playfield is made realy nice. I play it sometimes ... funny - mostly when I played StarWars before ;-) |

The truth is out there - but not in this machine. I was think, maybe I could place a big poster at the wall and can safe the space for this machine. The whole lower playfield is just some piece of art work - a large X and the well known faces - surrounded by a lot of nothing. The alien in the barrel is a nice toy and finally the moving cabinet (to start a multiball) makes the game a little bit more attractive to me. Not in my TOP20. |

It looks like a retro game from the 70th - but it's not old and not retro. SEGA ealier tried some 3D effects with a projection to a glass table. Here they combined a not to difficult pinball with a simple playfield and a kind of 3D projection in the upper playfield area. It's funny and crazy videos and sounds make it 'rolling'... Luckily - there is only on machine here with this kind of playfield and functionality - because it's to far aways from a classic pinball machine - which I would always prefere. |

Here we are! Elvira is showing up at a pinball machine - but she is not doing realy good... I mean - the machine is from end of the 80th - okay. But the playfield is realy simple. Some nice looks, some little moving toys and 2 impressive ramps...Maybe the designer was thinking about Elviras legs - when he created the ramps. It is easy to play, nothing special - but good for a short pinball action without going on a big journey. |

Yes! Yes! Yes! Okay, the flyer for this machine is hotter then any part of the machine itself. But this one is out of rating. It's a classic machine. It's about Playboy. It's working. What else you want? |

OMG! Dirty Harry... I think - a totally underrated machine. I like playing it, when I like to hear some cool phrases... or when I just like to kick some ass. I added some a art baldes, a helicopter and a police car to the playfield. I also colored the white labels/light on the playfield to a blue color. |
I try to bring some things up - recently happend to me, when I bought or fixed something.
WOW - What a pinball machine. The lightshow, the music and the facts about newest technology got me! A friend ask me, if he can do me a favor and I said - YES, you can. So, we orderd a LE version at Pinball Universe. The machine arrieved: One of the moving heads was damaged - material is to thin to hold the gear; some spring washers missed at the stars to control the way of the ball at the guitar; gate stopper did not work; audiojack is dead, gummis and silcon parts were TOTALY damaged after 3 days (92 games) - and (!) there is a hole in the playfield glass - a tiny little 1mm hole! PLUS: I heard from PU, they worked 9 hours on my machine and already exchanged a LED driver board.
Really?
I mean it's not a real cheap machine and this is the quality JJP bring to the European market...
And please: Do not repeat the stupid sentence from some other stupid people: It's a pinball, what can you do, there is always something to do! What? If you buy a washer for 10k - it should work for years. Even if you buy a used car for 10k - it works and does not bring such things with it!
Finally: PU fixed it - everyting!
It's again Pinball Universe (DE) which was sending me some nice mods for my 'The Munsters Pro" pinball machine. I agree, that some parts are really nice made and there is some work to do it. But there are some parts - right out of the 3D printer - for an outrageous price. Why are these things not placed at 'thingiverse.com'. I know from own products (not at thingiverse.com) - people like to donate for good things. If it is something more complicated or complex - with some electric - I agree with selling it for a good price. Finally - the quality for these products and 3D prints is good for my old machines - like Frankenstein - where himself is looking like cutted out from a piece of wood. But the quality does not fit for new machines - where the production of figures was already made with the same technology like they do it for big series. And - there are not only the mod parts or add-ons. There are a lot of little improving parts. For 'The Munsters' I downloaded this little 'holder' to keep one of the long railings in right position. I think, this would be a nice idea, if someone would start this. I would support this is any way!
Like, if you agree! It is not long ago - some bad smell was coming out of the backbox - a little bang followed - a fuse was blown and there was a big black hole behind my large Frankenstein display... You can't really repair it - you can only fix it - because there are - I'm not sure but maybe 200 solder points behind it... So I decided to try a PIN2DMD color display in that size. I got it some days later. Yes - it was easy to install - like they told me and it was working the same way. First of all: There are 3 displays as a matrix together. Unfortunately - there is a optical distance between each display. So a full pictures is devided in 3 single parts. When you have just numbers or some text at the display - it's mostly okay - but, if there are graphics or just a full block of dots - it looks not nice and I do not like it. Colorization: No. Please, no. It's maybe a nice idea and they way, how they do it is amazing - but possibilities to do it a really good - are poor - so the result is poor too. I was happy, when a friend fixed my original display and when I put it back to my machine. My machine was happy to - I got directly while testing a new high score. I told you - they have a heart and brain...
Like, if you agree!Depending on my machine and how they work - I buy my balls at Harald Litfin - www.flipperteile.com
High polished balls are good for the conditions of any playfield. Also the exchange from 'used' balls from time to time is a good option.
For games with magnets - the ball should follow the magnet (mostly electric) when it's turned on - but the ball should loose magnetization when it's off.
Most balls you get are a bit oily. This is normal and it protects the balls. Do not clean the balls by using hard cleaner or alcohol. Just use some soft cloth.
Even when I did not board many machines by myself - I'm interested in buying machines. Friends asking me very often - how and where to buy... So, if you like to sell and your offer is serious - why not! Please no offers of new machines from dealers - if I like to buy a new one - I would first ask Pinball Universe (DE).
